Hope Within: Installation Art

Every adversity, every failure, every heartache
carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.

I'm finally (almost) done! The last few weeks were crazy and hectic! So many deadlines, so many projects! And on top of that: my thesis! It's finally done and submitted, and I will probably make a post about it later on. For now, I wanted to use this free time I have for the time being and write a post about one of my university projects.

One of the courses I had this semester was Artistic Applications of Animation and was basically revolving around installation art and video art. For our final project, we had to combine the two and create an installation art that utilizes some kind of video or animation as part of it. In a team of 10, we came up with unique ideas and ended up combining some to form this amazing concept of a cube made of threads that would engulf and enclose a hologram while projections were covering it. I know it might sound crazy or extreme but we worked hard in order to achieve our original idea and, well, here it is!

The main concept was life (hence the threads), and the adversities or misfortunes that keep us from finding and enjoying the real meaning of it. On the cube, an animation representing these problems is being projected and when it pauses for a while, a hologram lights up for a few seconds in the center of the cube, representing life itself. The 3D hologram is a blooming lotus. The installation art can be viewed from all sides (and it should, in order to see the whole video) and viewers need to wait for the video to end in order to enjoy the ephemeral hologram, symbolizing the patience and tolerance required in life in order to finally find some catharsis. Each part is of course accompanied with corresponding sounds. Basically, it's two contradicting images: chaos and peace, both parts of life, one leading to the other.

We presented the final result last week before the semester was over but there are more shows to come that will exhibit our art. We are all very excited about it. If you happen to visit Limassol during the summer, make sure to check it out in one of the exhibitions.
